Night Terrors

Poor Ian.

He's woken up 3 times already tonight screaming and crying...talking gibberish, pointing at phantom objects, not focusing on us when we talk to him. I'm pretty sure it's just night terrors, but man, it is scary.

Anyone have any advice?

Okay, I am pretty much the expert on Night Terrors since all three (yes even poor little Porter) have them. The best advice I can give from personal experience is do not wake them up. If they are still half asleep just hold them tell them you love them and everything is okay but don't wake them up. Every time we have, they have much worse ones and remember the previous ones. If Ian is sick then he is already a little prone to them. Patience is a key thing with these. I am so sorry, it is so sad when they are so terrified and you wish that you could take that away. Hold them until they stop crying and then lay them back down. That is pretty much all you can do.

My son had night terrors when he was 2 or 3. They were random, and fortunately not too often, but MAN did they freak me out. The best we found was not to hold him (the first time I picked him up to comfort him, and he fought me off for the longest time - it took about an hour before he just wore himself out).

After that, I would just watch him to make sure he was safe, and let him cry it out.

Scary stuff (for us - he never even seemed to remember in the morning at all). Good luck - hopefully someone else will have some better tips!

Just ask the Pink Haired man to leave for a bit.

You can check out www.nightterrors.org for some good tips. There is a messageboard for childhood night terrors. I have found that the page called "Darlene's cure" works well.
